American Vacationers, Retirees and Adventurers Find Cheap Real Estate and the Good Life in Canada

As more Americans seek to buy second homes and vacation homes, a growing number are expanding the horizons and looking beyond US borders. Some people are buying lots and undeveloped land planning to build vacation or retirement homes in the future. Others are purchasing existing homes to use on weekends or summer vacations until they're ready to retire. A few are relocating now to enjoy a lower cost of living and higher quality of life.

With some of the world's most breathtaking Atlantic coastline, beautiful countryside, affordable real estate, and low crime, it's no wonder more Americans are moving north of the border. Specifically: to Nova Scotia, Canada's second smallest province (which is almost completely surrounded by water).

Its capital Halifax (which has big city amenities with a small-town feel), an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities, historic Scottish, Celtic and Arcadian heritage, slower pace, and a strong maritime atmosphere are a few reasons Nova Scotia has been called "Canada's Old New England" by some transplants. Prices here can be very easy on the wallet, with single-family homes on several acres starting at $75,000, and waterfront lots as low as $15,000.

So, if you're looking to stretch your dollars, aren't put off by a little snow, enjoy seafood, and have a 19th-century mindset, then Nova Scotia may just be for you.

*Prices are in U.S. Dollars.
